Another tanker aborted its Strait of Hormuz transit after two explosions were reported 37 NM southwest of Bandar-e-Jask, Iran, according to Ambrey. The attempted attack coincided with Iran announcing a deal with Oman to "reopen" the strait — a toll proposal the US has previously rejected and that would require IMO member approval under UNCLOS. Bridget Diakun of Lloyd's List Intelligence noted that non-Iranian-linked transits rose from 28 to 52 week on week, against a pre-crisis norm of over 700, and that 70 vessels that arrived in February plus 65 that entered during the collapsed MOU period remain stuck. Neil Dekker of Infospectrum said major liners see no reason to alter Cape-routed services.
Context
The latest abort comes days after a GasLog LNG carrier sustained damage exiting the strait on July 31 and two tankers were attacked near the Omani coast.
