An NSF notice on 21 May initiated a "descoping" of the $368m Ocean Observatories Initiative that will remove all in-water infrastructure from sites off North Carolina, Oregon, Washington, Alaska, and the Irminger Sea over a 15-month phased recovery. The network's more than 900 instruments have delivered continuous real-time ocean data since June 2016, informing research on the AMOC, carbon sequestration, and marine ecosystems.
