Industry now projects that just under 20% of EU battery production will be locally sourced by 1 January 2027, far short of the 70% battery-pack and 65% battery-cell thresholds required for tariff-free trade under the Brexit deal. ACEA and the SMMT are asking the European Commission to suspend those rules of origin a second time, after an earlier three-year waiver expires at the end of this year. It is the second time the industry has sought suspension of the post-Brexit EV tariff rules.
