Recorded bird species at the 190-hectare former dairy farm rose from 67 to 94, butterfly species from 11 to 24, and small mammal species reached five compared with three at a nearby organic dairy farm, according to a state of nature report published by Heal Rewilding three years after the cessation of conventional agriculture. The site near Frome now hosts at least 15 bat species and 60 species of breeding bird, including endangered bullfinch and tree pipit, with stream restoration aided by free-roaming beavers and the introduction of two Tamworth pigs, while further large herbivores are planned. The charity acquired the site through donations and philanthropic lending and runs the project with more than 250 volunteers and partnerships with 15 underserved groups.
