Commercial and industrial buildings have installed only 5.6 GW of rooftop solar, compared with 22 GW on homes, despite consuming more electricity, according to an analysis by the Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis (IEEFA). The report points to split incentives between tenants and landlords, inconsistent network tariff structures, and slow, unpredictable grid connections as key barriers, and recommends targeted incentive schemes for systems too large for residential programs but too small for utility-scale support, as well as tariff standardisation and distribution service reform. The analysis estimates a technical rooftop potential above 80 GW if agricultural areas are included.
