The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) announced that from Wednesday Google will begin testing a control letting UK publishers block their content from appearing in AI search summaries while keeping it in traditional search results, responding to publisher complaints of lost traffic and revenue. The move follows the CMA’s January proposal and its formal designation of Google with strategic market status under the UK’s digital markets competition regime, which also mandates clear attribution and links in AI-generated summaries. Google holds more than 90% of UK search and intends to roll the opt-out control out globally.
