Aldi is now less than one percentage point from overtaking Asda as Great Britain’s third-largest grocer, chair Allan Leighton said while presenting his turnaround strategy 18 months into his return. Leighton stated the £1bn “Project Future” IT separation from Walmart is now stable and a new deal with Ocado will modernise the online business, while claiming prices are 4–7% cheaper than Tesco, Sainsbury’s and Morrisons. He also outlined a plan for 500 stand-alone George stores within five years, aiming to double the label’s sales to £5bn.
