The study found daughters of mothers with elevated blood levels of two specific PFAS compounds were 2.3 to 2.7 times more likely to develop PMOS or moderate-to-severe acne by their late teens, based on a longitudinal cohort of roughly 325 Boston-area mother-daughter pairs from Project Viva. The associated compounds are N-EtFOSAA, which can degrade into PFOS, and PFNA; the study's authors note the sample size is small and skewed toward white, college-educated participants. The condition was formally renamed from polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) to polyendocrine metabolic ovarian syndrome (PMOS) in May to reflect its systemic hormonal nature.
