The Merlin app, downloaded more than 40 million times across 240 countries, will begin automatically feeding its sound-based bird identifications into Cornell’s eBird database, which already holds over 2 billion observation records. The update will allow recordings made in Merlin to be uploaded to eBird, linking real-time machine-learning detections of 2,066 species to one of the world’s largest citizen-science biodiversity platforms.
