The CMA CGM Iron, adapted to burn methanol, ethanol, and conventional bunker fuel, is scheduled to depart Santos early Tuesday bound for Sri Lanka, Singapore, and China carrying general cargo. The voyage is the first test of Brazilian-sourced ethanol as a maritime fuel, coming as the IMO’s net-zero framework—approved in April 2025 and set for formal adoption in December 2026—prepares to enforce emission rules that could open a market for ethanol. Brazil produced 37 billion liters of ethanol in the crop year to March, while the global shipping industry consumes around 250 million tons of fuel annually.
