Rebalance Earth is providing “a few million” in funding to rewild approximately 700 hectares of the 1,100-hectare Broughton Sanctuary estate near Skipton, covering spruce felling, native tree and shrub planting, and the introduction of Iron age pigs and Dales ponies; food production will continue from orchards, allotments and about 60 cattle. The estate’s nature recovery programme began in 2021 under owner Roger Tempest and has already planted 330,000 trees, reintroduced beavers, and seen otters and curlews return. The fund’s backer, the West Yorkshire Pension Fund, has invested £25m in Rebalance Earth.
