New research estimates that the Rosebank oilfield would produce about 250m tonnes of CO₂ over its lifetime, equivalent to 70% of the UK’s annual emissions. At least 60 Labour MPs and MSPs have publicly urged prospective prime minister Andy Burnham to rule out its development, while IEA executive director Fatih Birol said the field and other new North Sea projects would not reduce oil or gas prices and would have little economic impact.
