The train braked nine seconds before impact, slowing from 76mph to 49mph before colliding with a stationary train that had stopped because a fault in its automatic warning system (AWS) triggered its brakes. The stopped Nottingham–London train was a new Aurora class 810 built by Hitachi and introduced in the past six months. The crash at 5.15pm on 20 June killed 60-year-old driver Shaun Burton and injured 102 passengers (8 remain critical). The Rail Accident Investigation Branch’s initial report notes that CCTV showed the Corby–Luton Airport express passing a yellow caution then a red signal, and that the train protection and warning system (TPWS) was not installed on this stretch of the Midland main line.
