Turkish environment minister Murat Kurum proposed a global target of 35% of final energy demand to be met from electricity by 2035, up from the current share of about 20%, during the Bonn preparatory talks for the Cop31 summit. The summit, jointly hosted by Turkey and Australia this November in Antalya, will ask the IEA to produce a report on how to meet the target; it would be the first electrification goal set by a Cop, where prior targets focused on tripling renewables and doubling energy efficiency. Kurum made the call as the world faces an oil price above $100 per barrel owing to the Iran war and scientists warn of a “super El Niño” intensifying extreme weather, while UN climate chief Simon Stiell said accelerating climate action was imperative.
