OneKind and the League Against Cruel Sports released a joint report urging a negotiated phase-out of the annual guga hunt on Sula Sgeir, criticizing the approach of Protect the Wild, which had staged a 60-hour occupation of NatureScot’s roof and commissioned a video narrated by Brian Cox. The hunt, legally protected under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 and licensed by NatureScot, saw its quota cut to 500 chicks last year following avian flu concerns; hunters from Ness, Lewis, snare unfledged gannets with long poles, club them unconscious and decapitate them. A petition supporting a ban reached 183,000 signatures.
