A study published in Environmental Research Climate analysed anonymised mobile-phone location data from Brazil, China, France, India, Nigeria, Turkey and the US during heatwaves in 2022 and 2023. The data show that while people generally retreat into their homes, those without air conditioning use shopping malls and parks as cool refuges. The researchers additionally note that in Mexico people aged 18–35 were disproportionately likely to die from heat, a finding they link to outdoor work and limited flexibility over working hours.
