A coalition that includes former English footballer David Wheeler and Major League Baseball pitcher Brent Suter plans demonstrations on Saturday 21 June at five 2026 World Cup stadiums — SoFi Stadium (Los Angeles), Hard Rock Stadium (Miami), and three further venues in New Jersey, Seattle, and Dallas — calling on Fifa to drop Saudi Aramco as its exclusive energy sponsor. The protests are organised by Zan Dubin and will also target other sport–fossil-fuel links, including the Los Angeles Dodgers’ tie with Phillips 66, the Cleveland Guardians’ tie with Marathon Petroleum, and the Portland Timbers’ deal with Bank of America. Fifa did not respond to a fresh request for comment, but in 2024 it defended the Aramco partnership as part of an inclusive commercial programme whose revenues are reinvested in football; Aramco likewise declined to comment on the protests.
