Temperatures during the June 2026 heatwave have triggered the closure of about 300 schools in Somerset, Gloucestershire, and Buckinghamshire, while hospitals enacted extreme weather plans and care homes deployed fans, air conditioners, and designated cool rooms in an attempt to protect residents. A UK Health Security Agency review following the 2022 heatwave, when England recorded nearly 3,000 heat-related deaths, the vast majority among people aged over 65, found the care estate was ill equipped for extreme heat and often reliant on inadequate cooling systems. A Climate Change Committee report published last month concluded the care sector was underprepared for severe heat and proposed a target that all care homes should be able to maintain indoor temperatures of between 16C and 26C by 2040.
