The Katwijk stage falls on Thursday 13 August, part of the 13th edition running 1–15 August across thirty stages covering the entire Dutch North Sea coast from Zeeland to the Wadden Islands. Stichting De Noordzee organizes the event and reports that small plastic fragments now account for 18.4% of all registered beach litter, up from 10.3% in 2014, with last year’s cleanup collecting 51,000 cigarette butts. The foundation asks this year’s participants to pay extra attention to those small pieces, including nurdles, during the nationwide cleanup.
