The chief engineer died when an unknown projectile hit the engine room of the Minoan Dignity, a 76,801 dwt Liberia-flagged panamax bulk carrier, yesterday evening while about five nautical miles off Oman. Two helicopter evacuation attempts failed, and the Omani Coast Guard is expected to assist. The 2004-built vessel, registered to Asante Management Co and managed by Athens-based Modion Maritime Management, was struck as Iranian state-linked media claimed a UAE-owned tanker had been detained near Qeshm Island. Fars News Agency did not name the vessel, owner or cargo, and neither Tehran nor Abu Dhabi has confirmed the incident.
This is the first reported seafarer fatality in the series of Hormuz vessel strikes that began with the ADNOC tanker attacks.
