Removing VAT from domestic electricity bills will take an estimated £45 off the yearly Ofgem price cap from October 1, 2026, the government announced on Prime Minister Andy Burnham's second day in office. The move was welcomed by SSE chief executive Martin Pibworth and accompanied by the appointment of Miatta Fahnbulleh as the new Energy Secretary, replacing Ed Miliband. RenewableUK CEO Tara Singh urged Fahnbulleh to maximise new renewable energy capacity in the current auction round, stating that new onshore wind generates electricity at roughly half the cost of new gas-fired power plants.
