Former Peugeot Talbot UK managing director Sir Geoffrey Whalen has died aged 90. Previously personnel director at British Leyland, he helped replace the piecework system at Cowley and launch the Marina on schedule, and from 1984 he persuaded Peugeot to keep the Ryton plant open, securing its manufacture of the 309 and extending car-making in Coventry until 2006. He was appointed Chevalier of the Légion d’honneur in 1990 and received a knighthood in 1995.
