The claim was lodged against the Metropolitan Mayfair, a casino in the US-owned Metropolitan Casinos group (seven UK and four Egyptian sites), by a former waiter who says he was forced to share cash tips given directly to him with managers and that service-charge distribution was opaque and appeared to favour management. Payslips did not show how the optional 12.5% service charge on food and drinks was shared or whether card tips were distributed, and workers said they had not seen the tronc rules that supposedly governed allocations. The worker was dismissed after raising questions; the company says it had evidence he kept a large cash tip, which he denies and is also bringing a wrongful-dismissal claim. Another former colleague told the Guardian that a manager typically took £150–£300 from the weekly cash-tip pool, on top of basic salaries of about £28,000 and roughly £300 in monthly service charge.
