Trump Claims Hormuz Control as US, Iran Harden Their Stances
US Energy Secretary Chris Wright put the seven-day average for oil leaving Hormuz at almost 9 million barrels a day, above many trader estimates. The claim comes as President Donald Trump asserted "total control over the Hormuz Strait" late Tuesday at Joint Base Andrews, while Brent crude extended a six-day rally to just over $89 a barrel in London. Iran immediately dispelled the ownership claim, and former US deputy secretary of state Wendy Sherman described negotiations as "definitely at a stalemate." Pakistan's Khawaja Asif told Bloomberg the two sides are "close to some sort of arrangement," while Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi delivered a message from Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and army chief Asim Munir to Iran's leadership. Iran's Mohsen Rezaee said any agreement with Oman on strait control would remain separate from a full reopening, and that Tehran wants the war ended and frozen assets unfrozen. Twelve ship-to-ship cargo transfers were spotted Monday along over 100 kilometers of Omani and UAE coasts, indicating tankers are crossing with transponders off.
